GAME RECAP: Oilers Dominate Western in Home Opener Behind Edmunds' 7 Total TDs
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Huntington Beach Oilers returned to Cap Sheue Field for their 2025 home opener and delivered a statement performance, rolling past the Western Pioneers 48–7 in a CIF Southern Section non-league showdown and rematch from the 2024 CIF Southern Section Round 1 Playoffs on Thursday night.
Huntington Beach wasted no time setting the tone. Quarterback Brady Edmunds engineered a five-play, 36-yard drive midway through the first quarter, capping it with a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Oilers on top. As the quarter wound down, Edmunds struck again. With just four seconds remaining, he found Troy Foster streaking down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown pass, giving Huntington Beach a commanding 14–0 lead after the first.
Western's Chance Thomas provided the lone highlight for the Pioneers, finishing off an 80-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14–7. However, the Oilers answered immediately. On the very next series, Edmunds connected with Dylin Bruce for a 58-yard score, restoring momentum. Minutes later, Edmunds powered in from one yard out for his second rushing touchdown of the night. Before the half ended, Edmunds and the Oilers struck once more. He rolled right and delivered a 6-yard strike to Steel Kurtz, stretching the Huntington Beach lead to 34–7 at halftime.
The Oilers offense stayed sharp after the break. Edmunds led a 10-play, 72-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kurtz for their second scoring connection of the night. Huntington Beach wasn't finished. With under a minute left in the quarter, Edmunds fired a 16-yard touchdown to Bruce, pushing the Oilers lead to 48–7.
With the game well in hand, Huntington Beach's defense took over. The Oilers forced turnovers and held Western scoreless the rest of the way, sealing a dominant all-around victory.
Huntington Beach will stay home next week as the Oilers will host the Redondo Union Sea Hawks and seek revenge from a 21-0 shutout loss from a season ago.
