GAME RECAP: Oilers Edge Foothill on Senior Night, Set Up Epsilon League Title Showdown
HUNTINGTON BEACH — On a cool Senior Night at Cap Sheue Field, the Huntington Beach Oilers (7-1, 3-0 Epsilon League) battled past Foothill (3-5, 1-2) for a 21–14 victory, extending their winning streak to six games and setting up a league title clash next week against Crean Lutheran.
The Oilers set the tone early with a balanced opening drive, capped by Nathan Villanueva's 1-yard touchdown run to make it 7–0. Huntington Beach continued to control the game behind the precision of quarterback Brady Edmunds, who connected with Troy Foster on a 42-yard touchdown strike midway through the second quarter. The duo hooked up again in the third quarter from 12 yards out to push the lead to 21–0.
Foothill, however, refused to go quietly. The Knights got on the board early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jake Lind found Derek Simecek deep downfield for a 51-yard touchdown. Later, Fysher Jamieson powered in from a yard out to make it a one-score game with 42 seconds remaining. But Huntington Beach's special teams unit recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the victory and remain unbeaten in league play.
Edmunds finished 16-of-26 for 219 yards and two touchdowns, while Foster once again starred as the Oilers' top target, hauling in six catches for 117 yards and both scores. Steel Kurtz added four receptions for 55 yards and contributed in the ground game as well. Villanueva ran for 11 yards and a touchdown, while Nathan Sammartano added 16 yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, Huntington Beach was led by Gavin Seguin (4 tackles, 2.5 sacks), Maxson Borgquist (6 tackles, 1 sack), and Logan Gray (4 tackles, 1 TFL). Maxx Hopkins and Jimmel Champion each recorded interceptions, while the Oilers combined for four sacks and seven pass breakups on the night.
Despite being outgained in time of possession, the Oilers' opportunistic defense and explosive passing game proved the difference. Huntington Beach finished with 290 total yards to Foothill's 198 and held the Knights to just 17 rushing yards on 26 attempts.
The Oilers now turn their attention to next week's Epsilon League title showdown as they travel to face Crean Lutheran, with the league championship on the line.
