GAME RECAP: Oilers Escape Redondo at Home in Thriller
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – It was a nail-biter at Cap Sheue Field on Friday night, as the Huntington Beach Oilers survived a back-and-forth battle to edge Redondo Union 19-17 in a thriller that came down to the final seconds.
The Oilers struck first late in the opening quarter when kicker Jason Dunham drilled a 24-yard field goal to cap off a short drive and give Huntington Beach a 3-0 lead.
Redondo answered early in the second with a 32-yard field goal from Parker Blevins, knotting the game at 3-3. But on the ensuing kickoff, junior speedster Dylin Bruce electrified the home crowd with an 83-yard return for a touchdown, pushing the Oilers ahead 10-3.
After halftime, Redondo Union began to find its rhythm. Quarterback Cole Leinart engineered an 11-play, 44-yard march, capping it off with a 2-yard scoring strike to Adrian Ortiz midway through the third to tie the game again at 10-10.
The fourth quarter provided all the drama. Huntington Beach reclaimed the lead with a methodical 15-play drive that chewed up over seven minutes of clock, ending with Dunham's second field goal of the night, a 29-yarder to make it 13-10.
Redondo wasn't done. Leinart led a 72-yard scoring drive, punching it in himself from one yard out to give the Sea Hawks their first lead, 17-13, with just over four minutes to play.
With time running out, Huntington Beach quarterback Brady Edmunds led the drive of the night. The Oilers went 75 yards in just over two minutes, and Edmunds capped it with a gutsy 1-yard touchdown plunge with :22 seconds left. The extra point was missed, but it didn't matter—the Oilers escaped with the 19-17 win.
The Oilers will return to action next Friday night in another test under the lights at Cap Sheue Field vs the Mayfair Monsoons at 7pm
